A Minneapolis man was charged with the attempted murder of his son, Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman announced Wednesday.
Derrick Hogan, 42, also was charged with first-degree assault after shooting his son three times. Hogan is expected to make his first court appearance Wednesday.
According to the criminal complaint, police were sent to the 3400 block of Queen Avenue North about 6 p.m. Friday on a shooting and found Hogan’s son lying on the ground bleeding from a shot to the neck and two to the chest. The victim’s mother told police officers that the shooting arose as a result of an argument that turned physical between the father and son.
After the shooting, Hogan drove away from the area. The victim’s mother then contacted 9-1-1 to report the incident. Hogan was apprehended a short distance from where the shooting occurred, the complaint states.
Hogan’s girlfriend told police she saw what may have been a knife in the victim’s hand during the fight, although police never found one, according to the complaint. She also told police that Hogan shot his son three times.
The victim is hospitalized in critical condition.
