McMahon sentenced to 11 years in prison for fatal shooting downtown

7/10/2018

Hennepin County District Court Judge Jamie L. Anderson sentenced Jermaine James McMahon to 132 months in prison for the 2015 fatal shooting of 28-year-old Justin Williams, Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman announced Tuesday.

McMahon, 30, was found guilty by the court of second-degree, unintentional murder in a stipulated evidence trial, which was held May 30.

In court, Justin Williams’ mother Ramona Jammeh gave an impact statement and described receiving “a phone call that no one ever wants to be on the other end of.” She said her son was kind, smart, funny and loved by his family and friends. She also said that she believes in forgiveness, even though McMahon has shown no remorse nor given an explanation for why he shot Mr. Williams.

According to the criminal complaint, police responded to a call about shots fired in the area of 1010 Currie Avenue on March 27, 2015, at approximately 6 a.m. They found Williams lying in the street. He was transported to the hospital and died as a result of multiple gunshot wounds.

Surveillance video of the scene shows Williams walking across 10th Street and Currie Ave. A man, later identified as McMahon, is seen following him and then pointing a gun at Williams. He falls to the ground and McMahon approaches him, fires again and then flees on a bicycle.

McMahon responded to questions from Judge Anderson, but had no other comment. He was ordered to pay restitution and given credit for 1,195 days already served.
