Elsa Segura sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of release

11/9/2021

This morning, Elsa Segura was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of release for her involvement in the death of Monique Baugh and the shooting of Ms. Baugh’s boyfriend on New Year’s Eve 2019, Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman stated.

On Sept. 20, Segura, 29, of Fridley, was convicted by a Hennepin County jury for aiding and abetting premeditated first-degree murder. The mandatory sentence for that under Minnesota law is life in prison without the possibility of release.

She was also found guilty of aiding and abetting attempted premeditated first-degree murder, aiding and abetting kidnapping, and aiding and abetting first-degree murder while committing kidnapping.

“How cruel and callous the defendant was to participate in a plan that resulted in the murder of a young woman. It is a tragedy beyond words, as two children have been left behind without their mother,” Freeman said. “My sincere sympathies go out to the victim’s family, friends and loved ones.”

At the sentencing, Segura did not speak, while impact statements were read in court by the victim’s family.

Two other co-defendants in this case, 43-year-old Cedric Berry, of Minneapolis, and Berry Davis, 42, of Brooklyn Park, were sentenced to life without the possibility of release in July.

The cases of co-defendants, Lyndon Wiggins, 36, of Minneapolis, and Shante Davis, 39, of Minneapolis, have yet to go to trial. Wiggins was indicted by a Hennepin County Grand Jury in May for the same charges as Segura. His trial is scheduled for May 16, 2022.
