Auto Theft Prevention Tips

On average, nine cars per day are reported stolen in Hennepin County. The following tips will reduce the risk of your vehicle being stolen:
  1. Always lock your vehicle,
  2. Never leave your vehicle running and unattended,
  3. Visible items attract thieves,
  4. Always put your personal belongings in the trunk or out of site,
  5. Don’t keep your spare keys or fob in your car,
  6. If you believe your vehicle has been stolen, verify it wasn’t towed by calling your local impound lot,
  7. If your vehicle has been stolen, contact police with the following:
    1. Your license plate number,
    2. Your VIN number,
    3. Your vehicle make, model and color.
  8. Taking pictures of your car, license plate and VIN will aide the police in finding your vehicle if stolen.
